Philippine Curricula include American Literature
When historians look through history, they look at many different aspects of it including literature, whether it’s Native American tales or Ben Franklin's journal. There are hints that suggest certain values such as self-awareness, loyalty, nature, equality and fairness. Out of all the values, nature and equality (justice) have proven to be the most important. When we look in historic literature, fairness keeps showing up as the bases of everything good and nature has to do with everything in the world except humans. In Indian stories history repeats itself over and over again as each and every Indian tale has to do with nature.
Many people believe that classic literature is not important in society. They think that there are no important or relevant themes in classic literature and since most people don't read them, classics have little effect on culture. There is also the alternate view that classical literature should be preserved and taught because that is part of a society’s heritage and should not be forgotten. Classical literature is important much the same way that history is. It leaves lasting impressions that prevent people from simply repeating what has already happened in history.
Most critics hold that the history of American literature can be divided into six parts, orderly, colonial period, romanticism, realism, naturalism, modernism and post-modernism.
Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual movement that originated in late 18th century Western Europe. In part a revolt against aristocratic, social, and political norms of the Enlightenment period and a reaction against the rationalization of nature, in art and literature it stressed strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience, placing new emphasis on such emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe experienced in confronting the sublimity of nature. It elevated folk art, language and custom, as well as arguing for an epistemology based in usage and custom. It was influenced by ideas of the Enlightenment, particularly evolution and uniformitarianism, which argued that “the past is the key to the present,” and elevated medievalism and elements of art and narrative perceived to be from the medieval period. The name “romantic” itself comes from the term “romance” which is a prose or poetic heroic narrative originating in the medieval.
The ideologies and events of the French Revolution are thought to have influenced the movement. Romanticism elevated the achievements of what is perceived as misunderstood heroic individuals and artists that altered society. It also legitimized the individual imagination as a critical authority which permitted freedom from classical notions of form in art. There was a strong recourse to historical and natural inevitability in the representation of its ideas.
Modernism, on the other hand, is a trend of thought which affirms the power of human beings to make, improve, and reshape their environment, with the aid of scientific knowledge, technology and practical experimentation. It covers a variety of political, cultural, and artistic movements rooted in the changes in Western society at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. In search for continual improvement that characterizes modernism, individual modern movements often disclaim the authenticity of other modern movements over issues such as the relative importance of objectivity and subjectivity, simplicity versus complexity, high versus low and other perceived dichotomies. The reconciliation of apparent opposites has then given rise to additional modernist forms.
Meanwhile, postmodernism adherents often argue that their ideals have arisen as a result of particular economic and social conditions, including what is described as late capitalism and the omnipresence of broadcast media, and such conditions have pushed society into a new historical period. Postmodernism runs that economic and technological conditions of our age have given rise to decentralized, media-dominated society in which ideas are simulacra and only inter-referential representations and copies of each other, with no real original, stable or objective source for communication and meaning. Globalization, brought by innovations in communication, manufacturing and transportation, is often cited as one force which has driven the decentralized modern life, creating a culturally pluralistic and profoundly interconnected global society lacking any single dominant center of political power, communication, or intellectual production. The proliferation of outsourcing writer services in the Philippines and other English speaking countries apparently proves this theory.
The Filipino graduate has definitely undergone an extensive study of all these concepts because Philippine universities value and include Western Civilization and Literature in their general curricula. They give great importance to writing and literature because Philippine education aims to maintain their bilingualism and 100% English proficiency, which give them an edge in the global market. This advantage is no doubt one of the reasons why outsourcing writer services in the Philippines is remarkably patronized around the world. It is a prevalent opinion that literature is like all arts, a mere play of imagination, pleasing enough like a new novel without any serious or practical importance. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Literature preserves the ideals of a people and these ideals are love, faith, duty, friendship, freedom and reverence which are parts of human life most worthy of preservation.
Literature is the expression of life in words of truth and beauty, it is the written record of man's spirit, of his thoughts, emotions, aspirations. It is the history and only the history of the human soul having characteristics of its artistic quality, its suggestiveness and its permanent qualities which will never fade.
